Frequently Asked Questions
What does 'Met Up' stand for?
Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) Exchange To Unleash Power
Are you affiliated with act up?
MET UP takes inspiration and motivation from ACT UP, but no, we are not affiliated at present time. But they get a large amount of credit for helping spawn this idea and directing us where we need to travel to reach our own goals.
How do I get involved?
Visit the Exchange page for ways to participate. It can be a simple as spreading the word about MBC facts, or organizing or taking part in one of our events, or writing people to get them aware that the global deaths of 1430 people every day is simply unacceptable. You choose your involvement based on your own personal comfort level.
I don't wish to participate in a 'die-in'. Do I have to?
Absolutely not. If you are not comfortable with taking part in an organized Die-In, you are free to refrain from doing so. It might help if you determine the source of your discomfort. Are you uncomfortable with laying down and presenting yourself as deceased? If that is the case, perhaps you might be interested in volunteering your energy to a non-dying position, such as getting the word out, or helping organize those who will take part in the demonstration. If you disagree with the entire concept and want no part of it, that's fine too. Find your comfort level, and work from there. Consider joining the forums and looking around the different committees for ideas as to what you might be able to contribute. Even if it's just in the form of offering up feedback to others, that is valuable in itself.
Who started met up?
Jennie Grimes registered the METUP.ORG domain in April of 2015. She is also the author of 'The Philadelphia Story', which you can find linked underneath the 'History' page. This has become a group project, with more people on board sharing different responsibilities and contributing in different ways. The initial board members included Beth Caldwell, Jennie Grimes, Susanne Kraus-Dahlgren, Susan Rahn, Melissa McAllister, and Diane Fine.
Why 'Exchange'? I know it starts with 'e' but...
Because this entire project is an exchange of ideas, resources, and energy. When we're in active treatment, we might not be able to contribute, but those who can lead the charge when they can. It is no one person's foundation, but a living, growing colony of thoughts and brilliance from a variety of people. This is the exchange. We give, we get, we trade. In our unity, we are strong.
